Color is laid on thickly and in broad areas, as if Davis is re-organizing and smoothing out Van Gogh. He was after a combination of line and plane that would pack "diverse phenomena" of the world around him into "an autonomous sensate object" an object that people would find irresistibly communicative. Bass Rocks No. 2 achieves this. - Roberta Smith
